The Wildcard: Safari-Style Nilgai Day Hunts Near Falfurrias
Not many Texans can say they've glassed nilgai from a truck at sunrise. On this South Texas operation near Falfurrias, that's exactly how the day runs: through the gate at 5:00 a.m., hunting morning and afternoon, covering big country by vehicle and putting on a stalk when a bull shows himself. Nilgai are tough, wary, and carry some of the best wild table fare in Texas. Lodging can be arranged on-site, or you can bunk in town. A 4,500-plus-acre ranch near Ozona with year-round access and whitetail bucks running 140 to 170 inches, plus aoudad sheep and the occasional axis, fallow, or blackbuck passing through. Family-friendly operation, and only two spots open for the 2026–27 season. Big-country, low-pressure hunting on the Edwards Plateau doesn't come open often.
180 Acres in Foard County — 2 Spots Open. An annual lease near Crowell with a genuine mixed bag: whitetail, Rio Grande turkey, dove, and hogs. The property includes an enclosed stand/cabin you can sleep in — it could use a little TLC, but having a dry bunk on the lease beats a dark drive home every time. Year-round access, room for one or two hunters who want a dedicated spot without joining a big lease crew.
44 Quiet Acres in Montague County — Bow Only. North of Saint Jo, a peaceful, previously unhunted 44 acres for one or two bowhunters. Whitetail move through daily, with turkey, hogs, bobcat, and coyote in the mix.
